March 8, 1866 - John Wesley Dafoe was born. He came to Manitoba in 1901
to become the editor of the Free Press. In his 44 years at the helm, he
made the newspaper one of the most respected and influential in the
country.
March 8, 1873 - The Winnipeg Gas Company is incorporated to provide gas lighting to the City of Winnipeg. One of the founders of the company was Donald Smith who later became Lord Strathcona.
March 8, 1873 - The incorporation of the Winnipeg Board of Trade, forerunner to the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, is given royal ascent.
