March 4, 1966 – The Blizzard of 1966 hit Winnipeg. Over the course of the day about 35 centimeters of snow fell which, combined with 120 kilometre-per-hour winds, quickly ground the city to a halt.

Most of the snow fell during the workday which stranded thousands away from their home and killed two. Some department stores acted as temporary shelters for the night making room for 1,600 people.

For more about the blizzard, see here and here. For a perspective from south of the border.

March 4, 1984 - Sharon Carstairs became leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party. She is the first woman in Manitoba, and only the second in Canada, to lead a major political party.
