August 5, 1960 – The Rt. Hon. Arthur Meighen dies.
Born in Ontario in 1874, he trained as a lawyer at U of T and came to Portage la Prairie to practice law. He was first elected to Parliament as a Conservative for the riding of Portage la Prairie in 1908 and served until defeated in 1921. He was elected again in 1922.
Meighen served twice as Prime Minister, both times by appointment. He is the only Manitoban to hold that position.
In 2011 his official portrait was unveiled in the House of Commons.
