August 4, 2009 - Philip S. Lee is installed as Manitoba's Lieutenant Governor. He is the first Asian-Canadian to hold the post.

August 4, 1934 - Thorstein Oddson dies. An Icelandic immigrant, Oddson came to Manitoba s a carpenter and eventually got into the development game. He financed the construction of numerous apartment blocks in the West End of Winnipeg, including nine on Burnell Street.
