December 15, 1969 - The Manitoba Institute of Technology, which first opened on Henry Street in 1938, is rechristened Red River Community College. The student council was angry at what they deemed a "Mickey Mouse" name and threatened to boycott the ceremony if it was not changed. (The Manitoba Vocational Centre's name was also changed to Assibinoine Community College.)
The renaming was in anticipation of the addition of new programming that would be offered at the institutions, following the community college concept.
December 15, 1959 - Architect George Northwood dies. His work includes the Civic Auditorium (Provincial Archives) and the Ryan Block.
