February 13, 1947 - The Winnipeg Civic Music League, a collection of 20 smaller orchestras and bands, was incorporated as the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. A driving force behind its creation was Moe Genser.

The league had been mulling over the idea for a couple of years before deciding to take such a big step. They spent over a year fundraising with benefit concerts and selling $5 shares until they reached their goal of $15,000 and hired a conductor. The first WSO concert was held on December 16, 1948 at the Winnipeg Auditorium.
