January 2: Metropolitan Theatre opens; Manitoba's first New Year's Levée

January 2, 1871 - Manitoba Lieutenant Governor Adams Archibald hosts the province’s first New Year’s Levée at Upper Fort Garry. For a history of Manitoba's levée.

Metropolitan Theatre
January 2, 1920  - Winnipeg's Metropolitan Theatre opens as the Allen Theatre. The date was delayed when the 2,000 theatre sets went missing en route from Minnesota to Winnipeg.

After sitting empty for 25 years it reopened as the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre in 2012.


January 3, 1945 - Oliver Pollard dies. A pioneer of the printing industry in Manitoba, the company he co-founded in 1907, Saults and Pollard, is a predecessor to today’s Pollard Banknote.

January 2, 1975
- Winnipeg Transit bus number 647 pulls out of the North main Transit garage. Behind the wheel is Mary Staub, Winnipeg's first female transit driver.


January 2, 2016 - The Palomino Club closes.
