January 1: Unicity begins; Horrorscope debuts; WAA takes over YWG.

January 1, 1972 - The Unified City of Winnipeg "Unicity" comes into effect. 

It was the merger of thirteen municipalities: the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg; R.M. of Charleswood; City of East Kildonan; R.M. of Fort Garry; R.M. of North Kildonan; R.M. of Old Kildonan; City of St. Boniface; City of St. James; City of St. Vital; City of Transcona; Town of Tuxedo; City of West Kildonan, into one municipality.

January 1, 1990 – The comic strip “Horrorscope” debuts in The Toronto Star. It’s the work of Susan Kelso and Winnipeg’s Eric Olson.

January 1, 2003 - The Town of Gimli amalgamates with the R.M. of Gimli.

January 1, 1997 – Control of the Winnipeg International Airport, now Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, transfers from Transport Canada to the Winnipeg Airports Authority.

January 1, 1902 - Charles "Charley" Bélanger is born in Winnipeg. He competed for Canada in Light-Heavyweight Boxing at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games.
