October 9: Queen bids farewell, Red River College opens; Phyllis Yaffe.

October 9, 2002 - Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh wrap up their visit to Winnipeg. They made headlines for the re-dedication of the Golden Boy and when the Royal party's water taxi stalled in the Red River !

October 9, 2007 - Winnipeger Phyllis Yaffe is inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. She was the first president Showcase when it debuted in 1994. In 1996 she became CEO of Alliance Broadcasting and in 2005 the CEO of Alliance Atlantis Productions.

October 9, 1966 - The first human pancreas transplant is performed at the University of Manitoba.

October 9, 1938 - The Industrial Vocational Training School, forerunner to Red River College, opens at 831 Henry Avenue in Winnipeg.
