August 2, 1890 - The community of Virden, Manitoba
is incorporated as a village. When the town site was first laid out by
the railway it was to be named Manchester. It turned out that the name was already taken along the line so it was renamed for Verdun, the cathedral in France. For Virden's local history site.

August 2, 1918 - The Western Labor News begins publication in Winnipeg.
