January 19, 1958 - At a meeting in Winnipeg's Royal Alex Hotel, the Canadian Football Council withdraws from Canadian Rugby Union and becomes the Canadian Football League. (For more see my post on Syd Halter, the first CFL commissioner.)
January 19, 1996 - The board of the National Hockey League approves the move of the Winnipeg Jets to Phoenix. (See Winnipeg Jets Memorial Site.)
January 19, 1882 - The Brandon Sun Weekly begins publication. (That's even before the city of Brandon was incorporated !) It was a forerunner to today's Brandon Sun.
January 19, 1888 - Thomas Greenway
(Lib) becomes Premier of Manitoba and served until January 6, 1900. A
prize-winning rancher from the WestMan area, he is also in the Manitoba Agriculture Hall of Fame.

At 12 noon the first meeting of Winnipeg City Council takes place on
the second floor of ‘Bentley's’, a newly constructed building on the
northwest corner of Portage and Main.
